The First Look - Should You Forego Tradition?
I, of all people, understand tradition and it’s importance to many people; especially on a wedding day. More and more we are seeing wedding days break traditions and go with what is most wanted by the couples and families who experience the day together.
One of these traditions that are most often questioned is the first look. Should you or should you not entertain the thought? I can’t answer this question for you as it is a part of your day that will be remembered. Everyone wants to see the groom’s reaction when he first sees his bride walking down the isle. That moment of awe at the beauty of the one he will spend the rest of his life with as she walks down the isle to be joined with him is a treasured moment without a doubt.
There is also something to be said about this moment when done prior to the ceremony. The moment of awe and joy is still there, and often even more so. When a first look is set up to be a private moment between a husband and wife to be, it is just that…a private and loving moment. There is time to just be together and soak it all in before the ceremony ever begins; a moment to embrace and to let each other know what the comings moments mean to them.
There is a big plus in many of these occasions as well. Take the couple in the above photo, for instance; When the first look was done, an hour of time remained before the ceremony. This meant we could get the family and bridal party in place and take care of all of the formal photos before the ceremony even began. When a day is scheduled correctly with a first look, this is almost always possible and a good photographer will always be willing to assist youth the time-table required. When the ceremony is over and the guests are off to cocktail hour while awaiting the bridal party….the bridal party can then join them immediately and enjoy the day or evening together. There are no more time restraints on formal photos and a couple can join their family and friends without delay.
So what are your thoughts on this? Will you do a ‘First Look’ or stay true to tradition? I would love to hear your opinions!
